Inspired by nature, Sally weaves together the organic shapes and often vibrant colours found in the countryside around her.
Sally is a South Norfolk based artist. She has exhibited in several group shows in Norfolk and is an active member of both the Wymondham Art Society and the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle. She has a studio based in DesignerMakers 21 in Diss.
Sally’s increasing interest in collage work is reflected in the use of collage in her mixed media work, often her own hand-printed papers. Her abstract works express movement and emotion.
Drawn to an expressive approach, favouring gestural strokes and mark-making, Sally often first lays down collage pieces (taken from her sketchbook and painted plein air). She then creates a layer of colour and marks. Once dried, she adds further layers including hand-made stencilling and more organic marks to create a complex “ground”.
Her work embodies the energy, colour and line of the countryside; Sally prefer to create a loose ‘taming’ of nature and often uses semi-transparency of colour to “ghosts out” areas of the wildness of the earlier layers whilst retaining a hint of that natural energy – it is held momentarily at bay.
Sally’s mixed media works are most often created in acrylics, both paints and inks, but she also loves watercolour and charcoal. She enjoys conveying the beautiful countryside in flowing inks and watercolours, adding texture with mark-making tools.
